Electrical Stimulation

The application of electrical stimulation can aid in improving strength.  Electrical stimulation is also used to decrease pain and swelling, and to relieve muscle spasms.

Electrical stimulation with internal vaginal or rectal sensors can help with pelvic floor muscle training and suppression of bladder urgency.

Interferential current is useful to diminish nerve pain, improve circulation and decrease muscle spasm.

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) units utilize electrical impulses to stimulate low-threshold nerve fibers and mechanoreceptors.  This stimulation reduces the excitability of pain fibers which travel to the brain.  In this way, TENS reduces the number of pain messages sent to the brain from the uterus, cervix and low back.  TENS is useful for pelvic pain syndromes, bladder frequency and pain relief during labor and delivery.  Home units are available for rent or purchase.
