Urinary Incontinence

If you leak any amount of urine when you do not desire to void, you may be diagnosed with urinary incontinence.

It is estimated that the prevalence of urinary incontinence is 13 million in the United States alone.  According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, one out of twenty people in the general population have some form of incontinence.  The statistics are one in ten for those over 65 years of age, according to the National Women's Health Information Center, and one in three for pregnant women.  Incontinence is never considered normal, and treatment is available and successful.

There are three types of urinary incontinence treated by physical therapists: stress incontinence, urge incontinence, or mixed incontinence, a combination of stress and urge incontinence.

It is recommended that you get a thorough evaluation of your problem by your physician, to get a proper diagnosis before beginning physical therapy treatment.
